My company has experienced much over the last few years with new ownership, multiple restructures and the economic downturn. While everyone has to buy groceries and many have resorted to eating at home to combat what were higher gas prices and the aconomy in general, they have changed what they put in their shopping cart as well as how much they put in it. I have been fortunate to work for a manager and a director who have guided me and taught me more than I could ever tell you. They have trusted me with new tasks that have helped me grow as an individual and as part of the team. Today we lost MANY to job cuts.

Everything that has happened unfortunately also led to the company not being unable to partner with my team as the title sponsor. We as a team weren't able to give them what they needed to drive the business to have the sponsorship dollars in return. It is a double edged sword for me. I had to realize what it meant that the business would not have the funds to participate, what that potentially meant with regards to the business and what was on the horizon. I also had to hear the disappointment from my sister cycling teammates, some more negative than others about the loss. It was hard not to respond like a caged lion at times. I saw many around me, including my sister-in-law lose their jobs in order for my company to survive. I will ride my bike no matter what, some times more than others. I will race my bike, some times more than others. I will do this no matter what is on my jersey - something or nothing.

I held in my emotions today until I said a very tearful "see you later" to my director. He and I have butted heads many times and my growth process was very painful for both of us. He has supported me so much more than I deserved at times and I am forever grateful. He will still be with the company in a different role but that doesn't comfort me because of the way my team and I depend on him to teach us how to be better at what we are doing each day. Because of the investment he and my manager have made I've become an asset instead of a liability. I know I'll grow by him not being there, I'll learn to be more independent in that way, but cutting that cord is still hard.

I am left now drained from crying, though I am probably not done. I have a survivor's guilt that I don't think I could explain. We have lost so many, not because they were doing a bad job, but just because the company had to make a change to survive. I pray for those that were eliminated, that they find more than they could have hoped for. I pray for the team I will work with moving forward that in time we find a steady pace to continue on. I pray that everyone learn to be more than grateful for what they have and truly see how much others have lost.

God bless and keep you.

This Old House

Long time no post!! But Jon and I are all moved in, a task that nearly killed us... or made us kill each other. Luckily we came out unscathed which is more than I can say for the fridge which fell out of the moving truck. But at least it still works!

We've taken up in one of the additional bedrooms and have completed most of the demolition work in the master bath. We took out two small closets behind the shower which will give us enough room for a nice jetted tub :) We'll be replacing the sub floor next and we have to get the rest of the manual labor done before we move on to the aesthetics.

Sanchez and Maddee have adapted beautifully. Though the recent de-claw of Sanchez has been hard on us all I think he is almost out of the woods and both animals will soon be tearing from one end of the house to the other soon.

The recent cold, rainy weather has made me very happy we have a fireplace. I'm also happy we have a garage even though we can't use it as it is being used for demo storage.

An update

The last few months have been more than the word crazy could encompass. Work has been a challenge to say the least with my responsibilities changing. But I press on with much help from those around me and with the Good Lord's help I'll continue.

The past three weekends have been busy, busy, busy.

Three weekends ago we went to Beaufort for the state TT races. Due to low turn out the women's fields were eliminated which meant race with the men or not at all. I had no concerns about racing with men, I was more concerned with the race seeing as how I haven't really been in any kind of form or had any kind of training routine. We were at mile 31 and I was feeling good about things... I was going to finish. Then all of the sudden everyone just say up... we went from racing to riding a freaking Sunday bakery ride. I ran into the rider in front of me and then another rider went wide rights then back in front of me and went down and then I went down. I dot back up and finished the race with no serious damage to myself or my bike thank goodness. I still have the bruise on my shin which is probably going to take another week or two to heal since I fell and landed on that part of my leg while riding my cross bike at Paris Mtn.
Jon did very well in the crit and the RR. He amazes me b/c he has such an ability to suffer and he is so freak'n strong. Funny that those very things make me just as mad. He can have 5 beers a day and take a month off the bike and come back like nothing happened. I do that and I don't even want to ride 5 miles let a lone race.

Two weekends ago was the famous Greenville Classic weekend. I raced sat and sun. Sat was the women's open which I fell of the back of as usual... the hill on the second turn is NEVER kind to me. But my teammate Melissa and I linked up and finished the race together... thank God she was there to pull my tired butt around the back side of the course or I might have just quit. Sunday was much better for me in a Women's 4 field. 9 of us escaped from the large starting group and even though it hurt like hell it was a fun race. I made $ both days so I can't really complain. Jon did well but this is the first weekend that I've won more $ than him!!

Then this past weekend was the famous Tsali camping/Mtb trip which I have never been able to attend before. We headed up to meet RaeRae and Sperry and the rest of the group Friday. Unfortunately we missed dinner but spent some time around the fire with everyone before pitching the tent and turning in. Saturday we got up, had a great breakfast and went to ride. I have lost all my mojo on the mtb after bing off of it for 8 months or so. Riding trails that I didn't know didn't help and my back decided it didn't want to play nice either. So after one loop of what for me was a complete suffer fest I went back to the camp and relaxed. Jon came back from riding with Sean, Sperry and a few others and I was completely blown away by the fact that he stayed with them even with a small wreck that apparently didn't slow him down one bit. That night was filled with AWESOME food, one of Danna's YUMMY cakes, plenty of Rae-ritas and jack & coke's and we all listened to songs a plenty thanks to Bo, Rusty, Randy and Remey. Sunday provided a nice easy ride that was completely enjoyable and I think my decision to take one bottle instead of wearing a camelback paid off. So much of the best parts of my life revolve around my bikes and those I know because of them. I am truly blessed and look forward to the next adventure.

And I think that adventure will be the NCXC series that I will be doing with my teammate Debbie... hopefully she won't kick my butt to bad :)

Let me Introduce Pele & House news!!!

First off - Jon and I got the contract back for the home that we made an offer on. It is in the perfect location near my old apartment. Close to both my work and his and downtown. It is a 3 bedrm 2 bath ranch style home with a two car garage (which Jon loves), two living rooms, a cute kitchen which we will probably gut and open to the living room that has a fireplace (which I love) a dining room, a breakfast nook, a screened in back porch (which Sanchez will love) and a very nice fenced in backyard (which Maddee will love)!! We still have to get the inspection done, etc but things are looking very good right now. Please make offerings to the Home buying deities that things go faster than normal so maybe we could move in by the end of the month!!!

Speaking of deities may I introduce Pele; she is the newest edition to the bike collection that Jon and I already have. She is named for the Hawaiian goddess of fire..."She-Who-Shapes-The-Sacred-Land", or the Goddess of a Thousand Names, Pele was a passionate fire goddess who commanded both fear and respect. Pele is both a destructive and creative force." Obviously ecentricity is a theme when I name my bikes, except for my mtn bike which I normally refer to as Effie.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SMGOfHs1R8I/AAAAAAAAARE/Hztv-UMVEIc/s200/Pele.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242628106530146242" />

Double Bakery Delerium :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SKFwq24WVzI/AAAAAAAAAQc/UvWXkNvmhUo/s200/DBLbakeryGIRLZ.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233588123569903410" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SKFwnS82I4I/AAAAAAAAAQU/RsKaGR2Ru2s/s200/Jen+%26+Jenn+tandem+%232JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233588062385480578" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SKFwh83pvXI/AAAAAAAAAQM/zwz3zPo9Yt4/s200/riding+away.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233587970558770546" />

This weekend 1NJen, Kimberly, Sweet Melissa, Dawn, Caroline and myself rode from North Greenville and did the double bakery ride. It was wonderful!!! I rarely get to partake in those special rides with my teammates b/c I'm chained to the bike racks at the shop selling bikes, fixing flats and hustling Gu. But this was truly a worthwhile reason for a day off. I forget how theraputic riding with other women can be. I even made the comment that I could do the exact same ride with Jon and not feel near as good about myself as I did during and after. I felt great that day and I;m so glad I got to spend time with the girls!!!

Georgia Cup Excitement and the heat!!

There was a jam packed weekend of racing in Elberton, GA this past weekend thanks to the Georgia Cup. I must first say that this was a WONDERFULLY supported race, I was extremely impressed with the police and volunteer support. Though there were no women’s fields I give them a big Ole Golf Clap :)
Anywhoser… It started off Saturday with a team time trial which our very own Land Rover team dominated thanks to the streamlined style of big man on the bike Eric C. Then there was tons to watch in the men’s 3/4 crit which Jon finished 3rd in and the men’s 3 race which he finished 10th in and the team ended up winning.

He came home tired, slightly dehydrated but triumphant nonetheless and regaled me with the tale of him puking promptly after stepping down from the podium and then deciding what the hell, lets do the 3 race too. Can you even wonder why I'm so in love with him?? Then after a short discussion Saturday night I decided to go with him Sunday morning to race. Though there was no women’s field I entered the men’s 4/5. At the registration table I found out that the race was 2 laps which = 60 miles. GULP!! I hoped for one lap with the field which was small and not knowing these guys like I know the boy-cyclists of Greenville I was intimidated. We started out neutral until a right turn onto the course which gave me time to relax and hopefully ease the minds of the field that I wasn’t going to scream or cry or take any of them out. I had already selected my wheel for the race, he was a solid, calm looking fellow donning a plain white kit. He was exactly what I needed and was even mindful of me, constantly turning to see if I was still with him. Attacks would come and he would effortlessly pull me back to the field. I wondered how long I’d last, I have no computer on my bike so I never know anything any more. All I know is I made it almost to the top of the biggest hill on the course and just couldn’t hold on. The field eventually went out of sight and I was alone.

My legs hurt and were on the verge of cramping the whole time no matter how much fluid I forced down my throat. My inability to eat before early races crippled me combined with the heat and the lack of riding last week to facilitate the move out of my old apartment & making my shacking up with Jon official. I have never been so happy to cross a finish line even though I was willfully DNF-ing. I went to the car to change and waited for Jon’s race to finish. I heard the sirens of the police escort and here came big Eric C all by his lonesome for an awesome finish and BIG win. The sprint finish for the field was awesome b/c 3 field was the largest group. It was nothing but a winning weekend for the green zebras of Land Rover.

It was also good time spent with Jon which it seems there hasn’t been enough of the last few weeks with me moving. It has felt like life has been on hold the last few months and now it feels like the clouds are starting to lift. The rest of Sunday was spent at Granny’s pool with Jon’s mom, step-dad and little sister with a wonderful dinner following (certainly made me forget about my poor performance earlier in the day). I really cherish the time that we all spend together and fell so honored to have the warmth, love and trust that they have extended to me.

Planning a lot of riding this week, hopefully that will help things. Until next time, pedal like a girl!!

A litlle local race report

Last night was yet another in the BMW Summerseries. While the women's feilds have been SMALl to non-exsisitant after being cut from the race we received a pardon, if you will. There were are several women in Greenville forming a new team to help and inspire each other which I fully support. One of my best friends is part of this aspiring team and asked if I would be there. The thought was that if enough women showed up the race organizer would allow the women to start 20 seconds behind the men's field which is exactly what we did.
I tried to keep everyone in a pace line from the start which worked for the first lap. After that I tried to get them to pull through but we started breaking up. By the fourth lap it was just me and Kelly Patton switching off, eventually taking the wheel of one of the guys who got popped off.
All in all it was a wonderful race, I am so proud of each woman who was out there. Half the battle is getting out there and they all accomplished that. I wish there would have been more ladies out there, especially since it is a local race with a local organizer. It is low turn out like this that threatens the existance of women's 4 racing and the development of the sport. Regardless it was a wonderful race and I am so pleased that I was there to be a part of it!!

Blessing In Disguises do happen

So we got all the way to the appraisal for the home loan but the bank came back with a list of repairs that had to be completed before they would put $ in hand. We can't repair something we don't own, this had made me reconsider the intelligence that I once thought people who work in a bank and control things like loan might actually have. So after a brief jaunt with trying to find another lender Jon decided to cut his losses and walk away. Needless to say we've refocused on selling his house first instead of trying to juggle two mortgages even with someone renting where we're living now.

The task of moving all my things to the house has proven to be a bit of a headache b/c his roommate Ron's fitness equipment and our rather large bike collection are taking up the majority of the third bedroom. I'm hoping that Ron can find someplace by the end of the month which will give us plenty of time to help him move out and get my stuff in. The funny thing is that many years ago I moved from Spartanburg to Mauldin to be closer to work and created quite a nice little niche for myself... I never thought I would migrate back toward where I left. But I have to say that there is nothing like sitting in the back yard and seeing all the stars or seeing the the mountains loom in front of me on the drive home. Not to mention Maddee is beside herself with a huge back yard to run around in.

The drive to and from Greenville 6 times a week sucks but I'd drive back and forth from the moon to be with Jon and I believe that the house situation falling through is a blessing in disguise. That is the thing that mandy times can be hard about faith, I can't know what will happen when or why I can't just get what I want when I want it. God is just telling me, "I have something better in mind, but you'll get it in My time, not yours."

Made an offer

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SE_Ky8XWGVI/AAAAAAAAAPE/CsqSWPLg0ak/s320/Home_Shopping.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210606270437267794" />
So the offer has been made on the house that Jon and I found... the bank has until Thursday to accept or counter. We've been watching A LOT of home improvement shows lately, its kinda exciting to know that we have this great opportunity in front of us. I of course had to work Saturday but he took me by a few of the ones that he liked. It will be nice to have a backyard for Maddee to play in. I liked the first one that he took me to though I couldn't see the inside. It has a lot of potential, just needs some committment. I'm excited at the possibilties. I went off the front way to soon and then struggled to hang in. Eventually the inevitable happened and I got popped off. Iris (teammate) was with me and I used her wheel to regain my composure. We were then joined by one of the girls from the BMW team. We worked well together and on the last two laps Iris and I hung the BMW girl out in the front. With I don't know how many yards to go I stood up and sprinted my way around the BMW girl and had a foot or so on her finishing 7th overall. Still have a lot of work to do but it was a great night spent with the people I love the most in life. What could be better!! Oh and there was free beer after the race... so again, what could be better!!

Stabilization

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SBiep9ILNRI/AAAAAAAAANU/HM_9JLzch_g/s320/hugs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195076613792544018" />
Lots of things have been unsteady recently. Work is crazy b/c BI-LO is still restructuring. My manager of 2.5 years has gone back to store management b/c his job was elimiated as were those of others that I respected and enjoyed working with. All these changes made my heart and my head very unsteady with regards to my job, which is also changing. I love the people I work with even if there are times that we don't see eye to eye. They are an extension of my family and I value them.
So what is it that keeps me floating? My riding is just starting to heat up. I raced the SC State Criterium Championships in Charleston a few weeks ago, a race that I DID NOT INTEND on doing at all. I just went down to watch Jon race. But he and two of my teammates convinced me otherwise, even as I recovered from a KILLER sinus infection and felt horrible the day before the race when I went with Jon on his warm up ride. But in a field of 23 women I finished 8th overall and got a bronze medal for the state.
I fianlly got my new Madone... pics to come. She is beautiful. Black with white race x lite wheels pink pedals and pink carbon spacers for the headset which, you guessed it, Jon got for me.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SBiebdILNQI/AAAAAAAAANM/1FnI6KsSEq4/s200/so+cute.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195076364684440834" />
Then there is Jon. We have a few months together now. I know, I know... that isn't a lot of time but being with him is so comfortable. He solidifies me, lets me be me. Granted that his shyness and quietness were things that made me apprehensinve to go out with him to start with but they are now things that I cherish and admire about him. He has come out of his shell so much, I love his humor and his brilliance. He stabilizes me regardless of how hard the waves crash and the undertows pull. I learned that sometimes stepping out of the box is the best thing you can do, ignoring the path that you would usually follow and taking the road less traveled.

Racing Steadman Hawkins this Friday in Spartanburg, undecided about ORAMM.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/SBicadILNPI/AAAAAAAAANE/-E3_q_t5jN0/s200/riding+away+together.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195074148481316082" />

Off to see the Ortho

Due to the fact that PT and Chiro treatments have not solved the issues I'm having with my upper back and neck I have been referred to an Ortho. My appointment is today. I am a little concerned with the fact that I have to go in the first place. I started reading up on possible diagnosis and treatments and had to stop, I started scaring myself for what I pray is no reason at all.
Through it all I know God is working. My Dr's office called yesterday with the appt confirmation but I wasn't able to be seen until the 18th. I called the Ortho's office to see if I could go to the Chiro between now and then b/c I was in a lot of pain yesterday. They couldn't recommend that I go or not go, all I could think about was the pain I would be in for the next week while waiting to get in. The medication that my doctor prescribed helps but the fact that I can only take half the dosage to be at all cognizant at work doesn't. Then the most amazing thing happened, the Ortho office called about 10 minutes before I left work. They had a cancelation for an appointment today. Praise the Lord!!!!!!!!!! One more day down, one to go.

I have to stop living in what I thought the start of the season would be and I can't live in what I think the end of the season will be either. Today, right now is all that I need to focus on. Plus I have this really handsome Green Zebra to draft behind until I feel like taking a pull. Everything happens for a reason, even if at the time it makes no sense.

Stronghold Adveture Race

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/R9AqnYNwvhI/AAAAAAAAAM0/L4cwLpbuxOo/s200/Stronghold+Race.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5174682827852135954" />
Cathy and I went to Columbia Saturday am for the Stronghold adventure race. She has been asking me for years to do a race with her and it finally worked out that this was the race for us to do together. It was everything that I expected it to be. I give the majority the credit for our results to Cathy, she is a strong racer with so much ability. She did an awesome job navigating and plotting... I almost wondered what the hell she needed me there for. But we had fun, we were the only all female team there and apparently we made quite and impression on the organizers.
The first leg was on foot and we came in very near to the lead teams. Then we got on the bikes and took off. I had brake problems shortly after getting on the trail but a quick adjustment to my tabs cleared everything up. Then we had to canoe but due to my back we decided to get one check point and head back in. Then we went back out on foot after Cathy plotted out points. When we got back from that we had to cross a rope bridge, then get back across the creek to get our bikes and travel yet again back across the creek. Then we had to ride to find the last few checkpoints. I think that we got 20 or 21 out of 30. By the end of the race Cathy ran out of water and we both stopped eating the way we should. Neither of us really trained physically for this race so we started to run on empty tanks. We headed back to the finish and turned our race key in.
There was a big party after the race at the organizers climbing gym but we just wanted to get home. We were delirious but laughing the whole way home. I am so glad that I got to spend that time with Cathy, she is one of my best, closest friends and making that memory with her was so awesome. I can't say that I'll leave my loves of racing mtb and road but I'll definitely consider doing another adventure race or at least doing that one next year.

Pain

Yes, that is the only word that comes to mind when thinking of my last few rides. Hills that I saw myself improving on now have me crawling in my biggest ring. My back prevents me from completing a ride without stopping and my fitness, is, well non-existent. I rode with Arthur yesterday and a ride that we could easily have finished in 1:45 or 2 hrs took 3 hrs. My butt hurts and I feel more like we did 100 miles. My body is still struggling to recover.

I realize that I am coming back from an injury, I realize I am riding a bike that isn't at all like what I had, I realize I am 10 lbs heavier than I should be going into the season... I know I am starting over. But the feeling physically of starting over, of feeling the way I did a year ago when I really started applying myself is one that has humbled me beyond anything I could have imagined. I still suffer a depression that separates me from everyone else that I don't think they can understand. Melissa reminded me that it will all come back but it is a journey that is hard to start after knowing where I was before the accident.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/R8RGwDh_TEI/AAAAAAAAAMk/Wi_Se1k_JSs/s200/SIDI.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171336063523703874" />

I try to look at good things to motivate me, like the new pair of Sidi 6.6 Carbon shoes that were a Christmas present that should be here by the end of the week, the fact that the new team kits should also be here soon, the fact that I can still hang with Arthur on the flat stuff, the fact that my teammates are off to a strong season, the fact that I am alive and walking. It just hit me really hard last night that I have a lot of work to do, more than I wanted to admit. But I am committing myself to it. Not many things worth having in my life have come without working for them.

Adjusted

My MTB ride yesterday didn't do my back any favors and even my session shortly thereafter with Lucy Allen (THE BEST MASSAGE THERAPIST IN THE WORLD as far as I'm concerned) helped but didn't fully scratch the itch. I've had serious discomfort from the base of my spine all the way to the middle of my back and into my right shoulder.

This all being said I went to see the good Dr Jeff Brown this morning for a long overdue adjustment to the old back. I have never heard such sweet sounds waft from the area just above the middle of my back all the way up to the base of my neck. Yes, I've managed to get a few good pops over the last few days but nothing like the symphony that Jeff arranged. I sounded like a freaking bag of popcorn or a sheet of bubble wrap in the hands of a kid at Christmas. I have been liberated from the pain that has occupied that region for about two weeks now. Even the pain in my shoulder has dissipated as the day has stretched on. The officer that worked the wreck, also a cyclist, asked that I be there in case the driver tried to contest the ticket. I was stressed all week, worried... what if the judge throws the ticket out??? Not really sure of how these things work I probably put myself through more than I had to.

After hearing a case of a man that was charged with begging, drunk and disorderly and passively resisting arrest it was GO time. The case was called and the driver and the officer went to seperate podiums in front of the bench. The judge asked for the driver's plea on the charge of failure to yield. "Not Guilty", came the words from his mouth. My stomach dropped, did he really just say those words or are my ear playing tricks on me? The judge asked if the other party involved was there at which time the officer called me to stand with him at his podium.

We were all sworn in. The officer gave his testimony, then me and then the driver. I had a huge sense of calm and fear all at the same time but what I felt the most was hurt. I couldn't believe that this man, who told the officer the day that it happened that he did see me and just misjudged my speed, after swearing to tell the truth, was lying through his teeth. I know that his lie will hurt his life more than mine and I hate that for him. I don't want anything bad for him, I just want a new bike and my bills paid.

The judge rambled for a bit about his responsibility as a judge and that of the court. Then the verdict came... Guilty. I felt relieved. I was so thankful that the officer had told me what could happen and advised me to show up. I was thankful for the advice that Bo had given me... I was just thankful all the way around.
So I expect to get an offer on my bike today of not Monday. I still have therapy for my back and next and have started to seriously consider Yoga, wink wink.

Saul Raisin

I haven't been keeping up with Saul much these days but I just found out that he will never race again. The French doctors treating him say that it is to dangerous for him to take the risk of hitting his head again. I know that part of his heart died when he heard that he wasn't cleared and I can't imagine. I can only be excited for him as he is now married to the love of his life and he has the chance to reinvent himself in life. I wish him all the best as the new year rings in and hope he receives more blessings than anyone thought possible.
Never let the parameters of what you think is possible in life stop you, always think and live outside the box. Be bold and fight for the things you love. Saul fought long and hard to come back, he gave it his all. Not being able to come back doesn't mean that he is defeated, just shows what he is capable of. I hope that we all have battles to fight that make us realize just how strong we really are and how wonderful those who care for us are.

2007

2007 is heading out the door faster that a drunk hooker that fell asleep in church confessing Saturday and woke up during Sunday morning service. It has been a strange year, full of loss and gain, hope and accomplishment. There were a few things that shaped the year more so than others and accounted for my happiness or at times misery.
- The first would be the breaking down of my car. A tale of horror all in itself that prevented me from doing many things but also allowed me to do so much more than I thought it ever would. The commute helped add miles to my training and assisted in the task of getting my sorry butt into shape. It also showed me (and continues to)the kindness in people's hearts and the selfishness in others still. It showed me what people will do for you just because of who they are or if they care about you because of who you are. Definitely a benchmark in 2007.
- I was invited to race for DeFeet (Greenville Women's Cycling Team). We are the only all woman cycling/mtb team in the state. Being part of this group of women has changed my life in so many ways. Their ability motivated me and I was able to learn from all of them, on and off the bike. Their friendships enriched my life in a way that I never though possible. They have become my sisters and a network of support. I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2008.
- Then there was the loss of someone that meant the world to me, that was one of the best friends I've had in my life. I can say that I wish things were different until I'm blue in the face OR I can take all the beauty that was part of the experience and carry it in my heart. Sometimes God's answer to a prayer is "No", sometimes it is "Not yet" and sometimes it is "I have something better in mind". I have to continue believing that there is something better in store for both of us though I think a part of my heart will always mourn. Happiness is all that I want for them more than anything - even if we couldn't find it together.
- I started riding with Arthur. Hands down one of the strongest riders I know and someone who has the ability to push, motivate and challenge me. I went from racing in the B group to riding with the A's at Donaldson. I wasn't the last person up Paris Mtn anymore. I was climbing better (though still not where I want to be) and just all around stronger. he has been a coach, a domestique, a mechanic and a friend and I know that this year would not have been the same without him.
- Lastly and most recently I had a wreck. I was riding my bike to work and a car turned into my path and we collided. I hit the front quarter panel of the car and was thrown over my handle bars onto his hood. The driver stopped as well as many other motorists who saw the accident which totaled my bike and broke my helmet. I'm still recovering. My back and neck are in poor shape, I'm having trouble sleeping... I suppose that many out there who thought I was crazy for commuting on my bike feel authenticated in their rantings. But I look at it like this, 100 years ago it wasn't safe for a black person to walk into a public restaurant and order a cheeseburger b/c of segregation and racism. Racism is ignorance. I feel the same way about those who think bikes shouldn't be allowed on the road. Now lets clarify a few things. I'm not talking about riding on the highway and I think that anyone who rides a bike in heavily traffic'd areas needs to be aware of the risks. Cyclists should make sure that they are visible, wearing bright clothing and lights and obey the laws of the road.
A big part of me wishes that EVERYONE had to go without a car for a week just to see what it was like. I feel sorry for people who think "I drive therefore I am" and that b/c they have the bigger, stronger car they are more important. We, cyclists, aren't blocking traffic... WE ARE TRAFFIC. I suppose the bottom line is that if the motorists that are vehemently opposed to having cyclists on the road put their effort into things like bike lanes instead of coddling their ignorance the world just might be a better place.

It is what it is. I know that I am blessed. I have people that love me and I get to wake up each morning and scrub Miss Maddee's belly. A red Acura was in the turning lane, saw me and decided to turn anyway. Everything happened so quickly that I had no choice but run into him. I hit the front corner pannel of his car and went over my handle bars. I landed on the hood of the car and tried to stop myself from sliding off onto the road. I stopped and laid there, crying and scared as hell. It seemed like a life time passed, though it was probably only a matter of seconds. I am thankful to all the people who stopped, the fire department, the EMT's and the police officers who worked the wreck.

anyone in the mood for a taco??? Though 9 pro women stacked the start it was a great race. It is the first time I have NOT been a ball of nerves before a start. 15 laps and I had 5 teammates out there with me so at least I was in good company. The start was wicked, down the straight and in to the first turn, then the second which rolled up a grunt as crits go. As each lap went by it was harder to stay where I was with whatever group I was with. I found myself alone at some point, Dawn at one of the corners telling me to keep going. Good thing she was there or I might have quit.

I went with what I had in the tank for the rest of the race which wasn't much as I was alone with no one to trade pulls with and that damn hill took more and more out of me with each pass. The Columbian Cartel was camped out in the first turn screaming at me to keep going each time I cam around. The ringing of their cow bells giving me that little boost before I made the next turn. The Amy and three other girls pulled up behind me - thank the good Lord, so I though. Amy was as toasted as I was b/c the two girls with her wouldn't do any work and just sat on her wheel. There wasn't much left for us but to keep pedaling like hell if we wanted to stay away from the main group who were breathing down our necks.

Before we knew it we were on the last lap and the main group caught us. All we had to do was stay with them and our finish, granted one lap down from them, would count. As we approached the 3rd turn the girl in front of me slowed down and my tire brushed her rear derailleur. Luckily nothing bad happened but Amy was behind me and it almost took her down. She came around on my left and I went with her into the 4th and final turn. There it was, the finish, the hell which was the Downtown Greenville Classic was almost over. I managed to weave around Nicole and a few other girls so that I didn't finish dead last. I think I was 26th out of 30+. Not an outstanding finish but I didn't get lapped and left behind and I didn't DNF in a race with some seriously strong women (one of them the Masters 50+ National Criterium Champion)... life is good.

And I went back for seconds on Sunday with a smaller but no slower feild... 25 laps this time and I did DNF, oh well :)

Dopers Suck, just ask these guys...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/Ru6-oo4zKsI/AAAAAAAAAGU/GBFfDgbn3ZA/s320/Dopers+Suck.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5111232232491788994" />

Look What I Made

Made this as a b-day present. type='text'>Caesar's Head with the Pink Ladies and Spinners

I took today off from the shop to go and ride Caesar's head with some of my teammates and a few of the Spinners. We left from the Baptist church in Marietta aroud 8:30am. It was a glorious day with perfect weather, great company and awesome scenery. I found my stride while climbing and felt really great during my decents. I got to spend time with Dawn, Caroline and Amy... just riding with them helped me push myself to see what I was really capable of. 70 miles later we went to eat Mexican and relax. I couldn't have asked for a better day off.

Why I love my pooch

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/Ruq6o44zKhI/AAAAAAAAAEo/EZVK-fpqP98/s400/Jenn+%26+Maddee+Rock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110101938833402386" />
Maddee is the best dog ever. We had over 600 riders participate in the event and presented GHS and the LAF with a check for $86,000. I'm proud that I had some teammates out there participating in the event too.

The US Pro RR was great. I watched the majority of it from the Discovery Channel tent with my peeps from the bike shop and then watched the finish from the stage. Levi dropped the hammer and did some serious solo-ing. Though I wanted George to repeat I was happy that Levi won and the P3 team was fortunate enough to get a picture with him after he sprayed everyone with Champagne. Also MUCHO congrats to my teammate Kimberly Morgan for coordinating all of the volunteers for the Pro RR, you did a stellar job :)

The Hincapie party after the race was phenom. Good food, plenty of libations and quality people. Everyone from the P3 team was looking most refreshed and relaxed and thank goodness they all went home and showered... ha ha ha. Thanks to the beer wagon being out of the beer I really wanted I was extremely fortunate enough to meet some really cool dudes from Mavic who assisted me with the beheading of some seriously heinous beer foam. I repaid the favor with a trip downtown for some post party meandering. What was a late evening became an early morning and EVERY minute being worth it even though I missed my Monday MTB ride with Sweet Melissa :(

I'm definitely ready to get some traveling under my belt, one of the travel destinations that has been simmering in my heart for several years now has bubbled rapidly to the forefront of my thoughts. Good conversation made me realize that I've got nothing holding me back and that the opportunities are virtually endless. I don't want to look back on my life and I say didn't live, that I didn't do those things that burned in my heart b/c I felt like I shouldn't. I made a big move just coming to G-vegas, who's to say I couldn't do it anywhere else?? As long as there is a bike shop and people that ride on two wheels I'll be able to find a niche.
I'm also more motivated than ever to make sure I work with Medalist next year at the tour of cali!!!

NC/SC State Championship Race

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_nlFxa62SLx4/RuF7w-ckLmI/AAAAAAAAAB4/d0ufVnHtD3Y/s400/DeFeet+at+Barley%27s.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107499533741600354" />

It was the best of times it was the worst of times... That is all I can tell you about the race, OK, not the only thing.

We started at 8:30 as scheduled. We looked strong, 6 of us in the field of 13-15 and looking to control the race though a few big hitters were there from NC. We lined up, went neutral to the stop sign at the end of the road and then booked it. We started up the first hill and of course the first attack came. We kept everything together and Mel went up to the front to pace the second climb. I took a turn up there to but Cissy came a round me and told me to save it for the sprint. I just wanted to make sure that I finished or at least gave a good lead out. I prolly was spending to much time up front though, but more so because I was getting hung out in the rain by the NC gilrs. But I did move myself us there so I just paced myself.

At one point there was one attack that put me out front with the two girls from NC and Catherine James from HT Naturals (I think, that is what Mel told me) in a potential break but the space was bridged & everyone stayed together.

Things were going extremely well for the team and for me as we came to the start/finish and headed out for our second lap. We passed the feed zone where Kim and Rusty were shamelessly cheering for us and started rolling down the hill. Then it happened... the end of my race. The NC Hincapie girl (who was a frigg'n SANDBAGGER) came over on me, her real derailleur viciously attacking my front wheel like a rabid pit bull. We connected 3 times, luckily I was able to stay upright eventually rolling onto the grass and back on the road. I though I was OK, survived and no crash. But Cissy rode up next to me and asked if my wheel was OK. I looked down and knew it was all over for me. My wheel was warped and hitting my brakes with every rotation. So I threw my arm up and pulled out, FIT TO BE TIED!!!! I refused a ride from the wheel truck and from one of the Land Rover racers just showing up. I was fuming and needed to walk it off. I carried my bike back to the team tent in the feed zone.

I took some time to mourn my loss and then got it together so that I could cheer for my teammates as they crossed the finish line. I am OVERJOYED to say that Amy won the SC State title and Caroline finished right behind her. It was a great race, we got what we were after and no one got hurt when it turned harry. More road races are to come as I officially committed to switching my focus to road next year. I'm sure I'll still play in the dirt but I'm ready to race with the girlz again!!!

Tuesdays with Maury

OK, so I wasn't with Maury, I don't even know a Maury. It was still, however a Tuesday. But I decided to shake things up, or at least the decision was made for me. Word came down that there was only one police escort for Tuesday Donaldson festivities and of course they would be with the A group. I, along with the others decided that I would go with the A's.

We started, it was a good pace and then half way through the lap (as the A's only use half a lap to "warm up") the train stretched into a long line and everyone was booking. I had stayed up to close to the front and new I was gonna have to fall back or give it everything I had in me. I decided to go for it and pour what I had into staying with the attacks as long as I could. These dudes weren't playing. I was moving from wheel to wheel as riders came from behind. I slowed at the top of the hill before the RR tracks and got back into the group where I thought I would be somewhat safe and have a better draft. Oh S*&@!!! I lost a water bottle over the tracks. I called out to the riders behind me "BOTTLE".

The group continued to surge further along the 7 mile course. We hit the hill that comes before the finish and I just tried to stay tucked in, the attack shenanigans had worn me down. As we headed back out for lap two I had drifted all the way to the back, luckily Arthur was there and I took his wheel to get back into the crowd where I stayed until golf course hill. I again started to fall back. Arthur caught me again and pushed me back in where I stayed until the end of the that lap. I let them ride away from me, I didn't want to kill myself with a race comming up this weekend (see below blog entry).

But as I was spinning slowly, feeling somewhat beaten a Land Rover/Touring Sport racer passed me. "Oh Hell NO", I was not going to let him pass me and leave me, I would at least try to get his wheel. As it ends up I passed him up the hill. Then he pulled up next to me saying he guessed we's have to duke it out until the end. I didn't have the breath to say no, just smiled and nodded. I figured the motivation of keeping up with him would be a good thing, I ride faster with others than when I'm alone. At some point I got ahead of him, not sure how. He caught up after I stopped at the RR tracks to pick up the bottle I had dropped and we rode together for a little while longer, then I got ahead of him again. Still not sure how that happened either, he must have been tappering.

I pulled off and meandered a bit and then Dawn, Cissy and I jumped back in with the A's. I didn't last to long in the lap but I didn't feel like crap. Giselle told me how strong I looked in the attacks at the start of the ride. Yeah, unfortuantely they shelled me by lap three. Gotta stop getting so damn excited and remember to stay back in the pack.

NC/SC State Road Race & The Pink Pain Train

So the State road race is Saturday. I have decided to do the race with 4 or 5 other teammates. There are several of us riding strong so we have great chances to get to the podium which is extremely exciting. The Pink Pain Train will be in full force.

I've raced on team before but never like this with girls that are friends and so connected to each other. I'm excited, nervous, hopeful... but the best part is that Saturday night after the races we can take our number to Barley's and a free beer!!!

I'm looking forward to the race, spending some time with my teammates and a fun night of seeing those I already know and meeting some new people at Barley's post race. I haven't been out in a LONG time, gonna have to dust off the jeans, heels and lipstick :)

Another Big Finish

I had another GREAT ride at Donaldson this week. I finished 7th in the sprint, bridged a few gaps (one of them up Golf Course Hill), had one big attack and a few good pulls. I'm starting to think I want to race the SC/NC state road race and I only have one more week to decide.
I'm having a real breakthrough wtih my riding right now. I did a few rides with people who made me feel "less than worthy" to be looking at their ass as they rode away from me in recent months. I've always understood that there are going to be riders that are stronger than me. But being less than humble makes me want to smack the doo doo out of people. I spose I just need to focus on those that are willing to go a little slower than they can, make me hang on their wheel and encourage me when God and my legs know I want to stop and curl up like a little girl on the side of the road. Regardless, I've seen my progress mentally and physically. I never understood until these last few months how much those two aspects go hand in hand in cycling.
For the first time I feel really strong going in to the fall. Though it is hard to judge my "racing other women" ability unless I actually get to race them. Truth is the female competition around here blows some of the men I've raced out of the water. I'm thinking i need to step up my game and try to ride with the A's.

Keep the rubber side down :)

MTB in GA and thats no Bull

I have come to realize those things that I truly value in life. They are the things that make me leave a table full of Girlfriends out for a somewhat raucous evening of Birthday celebrations because I have to peel my butt out of bed at 5 in the morning. Yep, you read right, I got up at 5:00 am Sunday. ?For what??" you ask. For some mountain biking in Georgia at Bull Mountain. Well that and the promise of IHOP pre ride. Yumm, pancakes and crappy coffee :)
The plan was hatched by a friend who had a buddy driving from Atl to meet him and commence the "ASIAN GAMES, PART II". Both of them being of Asian descent they named their competition as such. We started the ride around 10:30 or 11:00. The weather was great, though a little humid, not to swampy. We climbed service road for a while and then ducked onto the trail. There was a lot of climbing to be done, big roots and loose rocks here and there. The trail was rolling, a few grunts, but it was nice.
We came to another portion of gravel service road that had to be climbed. As we started my friend Abey pulled away from me like someone was paying him to do so. I moved right to let his friend try to catch him. He pumped hard, came by me and looked like he was on his was to catching up. The road reminded me of Mitchell, I figured the best thing for me to do was just settle into my pace and stay steady since I didn't know how long we would be on it. But then something wonderful happened, I caught sight of Abey's friend and realized I was gonna catch him. Just as I started to pass him he stopped to rest and get a drink. Then the next mark came into sight. I could see Abey and I was determined to catch him. I put it in a harder gear and just stayed steady, gaining distance on him with each pedal stroke. I rode up next to him and we stayed together from that point on up to the top of the climb and waited for everyone else. We talked about it after the ride and he wasn't happy about being caught, I just told him I'm not fast or slow, just steady. So at least I have that going for me :)
Later on in the ride there was a nice downhill section that flowed really well, wasn't to steep. I was barely touching my brakes (which is rare on a DH) and I was finding some good lines. Debbie was right on my wheel so I think the pressure helped. Then all of the sudden I saw this big gray blob on my right. My front wheel shifted and before I could correct I ran over it. Debbie said my whole bike went sideways and my front tire went hard to the right. Luckily I caught enough air to get straightened out and somehow managed not to wreck.
We all regrouped and headed back to the cars. The ride was fun, we only did 15 miles and that took a while since we had different abilities and fitness levels in the group. But it was a great day in the saddle spent with people who mean the world to me.

A Swarm of Bs and my first honey pot

OK, let me get this out of my system... I FINISHED MY FIRST DONALDSON RACE OF THE YEAR LAST NIGHT!!!! AND I FINISHED IN THE LEAD PACK!!!

So yesterday was a good day. Arthur took me to work so that he could tune up my bike and then picked me up for Donaldson. As I walked out to the car I noticed my FUJI was perched upon some sweet Cane Creek wheels, yippee!! As we rode he asked what I planned on riding. I told him it would probably depend on what everyone else was going to do.
Once parked I met up with Susan, Kimberly, Danna and Caroline for the GO pics and then Kimberly and I went off for our warm up spin to Golf Course Hill and back. Once lined up I decided I was going to do the Bs with Cissy. We started out and Abhey came around the front on the warm up lap. We got going pretty fast for a warm up lap, at least that is what my legs were telling me. Caroline, Danna, Cissy and myself stayed close to each other for a while. Caroline busted booty and went on several breaks, staying strong in each one. Danna repeatedly worked her way to the front to mix it up. Cissy was showing everybody how to hang tuff after 2 months off a bike!! The laps went on and on. I just kept telling myself to ride smart and find the right wheel. I was forcing myself to survive the accelerations and hills. I lost one of my water bottles i think on lap 4, luckily I survived without it. I heard Danna ask me as we headed out for lap 5 if I was gonna do all 6?? I told her I was gonna try. My brain arguing with me each time that I was done and could quit, after all I had made it to 4 laps, farther than ever before. But then my bull headed alter ego showed up and asked what the hell good are 4 laps when you can finish???

At some point I attacked on the start of a lap. I pushed back into the draft when they caught me. On the start of lap 6 we got stuck behind some student drivers, driving 18 wheelers no less. But they got out of the way and we proceeded to finish our LAST LAP. After crossing the railroad tracks Tyler accidentally pushed me right. I went into the grass. Luckily Cissy was behind me and she kept a big gap so that I could get back in, it only took THREE tries to get back on the blacktop. That last hill came and I was thinking "I'm actually going to do it!!!" The front of the group surged as people tried getting off the front. Riders behind me tried to maneuver around me. I went up a few gears and my legs were burning like a five alarm fire. I caught as many wheels as I could since I was about to pop myself. But it happened, I finished, I think somewhere between 12th and 15th.

I jokingly told Arthur that it must have been the magic wheels on my bike but he reminded me that it isn't the bike, its the rider. The best part was being able to, even if only briefly, celebrate with Caroline and Susan. I think I'm ready for next week :)

Don't Look Back

It has been one hell of a month. Things are in a place right now that I didn't think they would ever be in. I've had my share of tears, hurt and anger recently... the kind of pain that makes you physically sick. My riding suffered just as much as my heart.
I had talked to Arthur Saturday afternoon and we planned a longish road ride for the next morning. Maybe 30 miles or so, nothing to hard or long since I was feeling less than par. So Sunday was a new day, I was coming out of the black abyss where I had been gripped by the kind of anger that leads you to say all kinds of nasty things to those that you would have never intentionally hurt. Around 8:00am we were off, headed south for a nice gently rolling ride.
It was a beautiful morning, gray and cool. After temps of 110+ in the afternoons the overcast day was a welcome sight, far from the normal label of "gloomy" that I would normally have smacked on it. We kitted up and pedaled away from the school out towards Spartanburg. I tucked in and sat on his wheel, it was strange how safe I felt behind him. I wanted to ride that way and not stop, just in his draft, away from hurt feelings and all the what ifs I had going through my head. Arthur is one of those very talented cyclists who can size you up within 5 minutes of riding with you. He has always known just how hard he can push me and I was thankful for that. He knew what I needed and what I could handle. I stayed so close to him that we might as well have been on a tandem.
The miles hummed by, we passed a house that had a huge stone gate and I turned my head to look at it. In just that brief second, where I lost focus, Arthur's wheel slipped away. I had to work to get back up to him. I realized something in that moment, that I have to look straight ahead and let those things that pass me by pass me by. No matter how beautiful I thought they were or how much potential I thought they had, they just weren't meant to be anything other than something that slips from my peripheral vision. If I stop to look back I'm going to slow my journey to the next wonderful destination that lies ahead of me or lose the safety of the draft in front of me.
At about 20 miles Arthur asked me how I was feeling, "I'm good". My responses are never long and I don't talk much when I ride... that is my time to either work my butt off or shut my mind down and just melt into the road. I had one gel with me as I had forgotten my gu flask when we left the apt. I sucked it down and fought to stay where I was. A few extremely flat sections came along and we were both in our big rings, Arthur kept looking back to see if I was still there. I was so tight on him that if he stopped pedaling even for just a second I would have ran up his rear. The surge in my legs was electric, it felt so good to be working and going so fast. We just glided over the blacktop the way a bird glides over the water in the winter when everything is still and silent. Arthur is always mindful to look back to see whre I'm at and make sure I'm still with him. He's always mindful to ask if the pace is alright, do we need to slow down or speed up. The funny thing is that his pace is always just where I need it to be, again I was greatful.
At the end of the ride we were in a headwind. Arthur was taking breaks here and there, taking what little pulls and draft I could offer him. I pulled the last few miles with everything I had left in my legs, I was to the point of bonking. But I wanted the pain, I wanted the physical pain to replace the wayward emotions and anger that had been occupying every part of my body. It swallowed me, turned me inside out and released so much of what had been building inside of me. It was almost like a bomb went off, leaving me black and charred. But at the same time I was refreshed, ready to move past it as we came to a stop sign and waited our turn to cross.
We headed back to the school where we started from and commenced changing and loading up. Something inside was dormant now, relieved. Arthur told me we did 50 miles @ 19.5mph. That was a hard pill to swallow considering how crappy I've been feeling lately, but good to know my legs can still kick, even if to the south on what we in the south call "flat". We both agreed there is much work to be done with me between now and October to be ready for Fall for Greenville and the Classics Race. I'm not a crit racer, never have been, but that is where my focus will be between now and then.
I'll probably hang my mtb shoes up until the fall. I'll have to take the winter to decide where I'm headed next year, if anywhere... we'll see. Luckily I have friends and everyone at the shop and the best team that anyone could ask for. I'm inspired to grow and redefine happiness for my life. Go Do, that is all you can do in this life. Let go of anger and move forward, be accountable for your words and actions and praise God that He gives you a new day to do the things that you didn't yesterday. Hope above all that your path be quick and your load be light because trials are not enemies of faith but opportunities to prove God's faithfulness. I intend on proving God faithful!

A New Catchphrase

VELONEWS:

Team CSC has joined the wristband bandwagon this year, but it sports an interesting slogan that isn't raising money for a charity or some do-good organization.

Instead, the letters across the black plastic wristband underscore the team's philosophy in this year's Tour: "Harden the Fuck Up."

"Stuart (O'Grady) brought them for the team in London and asked everyone to wear them," said Team CSC rider Frank Schleck. I actually didn't have to get up until 6:45am and that is sleeping in for me. I scrambled to get everything together and waited for my chariot to arrive. Arthur showed up at 7:45 on the nose and we were off, with Maddee in tow.

We got to the course at 8:30 which is exactly what I wanted, time to register and get my legs warm - WRONG. The line for registration was wrapped around the parking lot and there was only one, that's right folks, ONE person working registration. The guy putting your race number on the back of your leg didn't count. So 30 minutes of precious time was clicked away as I waited.

I got my number, went back to the car and proceeded to get ready. Got kitted up, numbered the bike, grabbed my bottles and Maddee and proceeded to the feed zone. A nice lady was there, sitting in her chair and I asked if she would be so kind as to watch Ms. Maddee while I raced and she obliged. Maddee of course did not like this one bit - "Mommy, you're chaining me to a tree and riding away - that isn't how it works!!!" was Mad's wining reply as I rolled away.

Once I got back down to the start I realized that I REALLY needed to hit the port-a-john... this resulted in strike two for the SERC series organizers as far as I was concerned. There were only two potties and you can imagine how long it took to actually get into one pre-race. 5 minutes seemed like 20 as time slipped away. Once i finally got in and out and back on the bike everyone was already lining up.

I ran across Deb from Asheville who raced Tiger Rag and we did our best impression of two chicks trying to warm up on the road. But being concerned with not missing our start we didn't stray to far and didn't really get much out of what we did. Sport Women were the last to go and there was no age group break.

At the whistle I figured I would just sit back and see what the pace was like. All four girls were into the woods ahead of me and that was fine. I wanted to find my legs and set my pace carefully considering I was, after all, colder than a penguin in the North Pole. I quickly passed one girl and stayed on the wheel of the third. I was tempted to pass but figured I would just sit there until the time was really, really right - mistake number one. We hit the first climb with railroad ties in the course and she had to dismount, making me slow to a crawl but I managed to stay on the bike. This went on for the next few climbs finally forcing me off the bike, jacking my pace and HR out of kilter and ultimately throwing off my mojo.

At that point that girl slipped away and I knew i was gonna have to bust butt to catch up, then it happened. We hit a small decent with two ledges that made me want to pee my chamois. I dropped off the first ledge and saw it in my head, I was going down. I managed to gracefully cartwheel over my bars and land on my feet - mental note let the bike's front fork do it's job on lap two!!! At this point the last girl passed me and there was no way in hell I was going to settle for that. I caught and finally passed her, putting enough space between us that she wouldn't be a worry for the rest of the ride.

Once I got through the middle part of the course I hit the lake portion of the race. The roots were still wet and didn't do me any favors. I was wishing I had about 30 more pound on me to keep my wheels down since my form wasn't as great as it should have been. I slammed my right, already bruised calf into a stump. Now the bruise should last for two months instead of the one that it looked like it was headed for. But I knew that the Hill from Hell was within reach and I wanted to get to it. I made it up to the open field before the hill and sucked down a gel and the rest of my bottle. The hill really wasn't as bad as Tiger Rag, still not fun though.

I made it to the top and asked someone to hand me my bottle which one woman happily did - it kinda sucks to watch others watching you, thinking about how much pain you look to be in, thinking there is no way in hell they would do that, asking themselves why anyone puts there body through so much agony, knowing you still have one more lap to go. As I approached the dirt road crossing there was Liz!!! Oh Liz - her enthusiasm and bottle were a sight for sore eyes (my ass was sore too but that is a different story). I grabbed the bottle and stuck it in my mouth so that I could steer. That part of the trail was tight and I didn't want to hit Liz or a tree. My luck I dropped the bottle and didn't get the first drop out of it. But I headed out for lap two - dear God please let me make it.

Lap two was OK, I got passed by MANY male riders this time. All of whom were very nice (except one jerk off who rides for OutSpoken that I really don't like anyway), letting me know they were back and asking to come by - all giving kudo's as they passed. I think that helped me, they all sounded sincere - though perhaps they were just admiring the PINK :)

This time I spanked the decent which made me endo on lap one, luckily a male rider came just in front of me and I threw my ass off the back of the saddle and followed his line. The hills reeked havoc on me as I was just tired. But knowin the course helped. I made it through lap two virtually unscathed and approached the Hill. By this point I was cooked but then I saw it, a dude was walking his bike up the hill. I absolutely refused to get off (not that I would have gotten off regardless) and I kept it steady so that I could pass him. I pulled up next to him on the first level out as he hopped back on. He tried to ride with me and then fell in behind me, I guessed wanting a draft. But I guess it was just to much for him and I quickly pulled away. No one was in the feed zone this time - it was like a ghost town. All I wanted to do was finish.

I winded my way through the last bit of single track before the first road crossing. I could see that the Beg Women were about to start and I could hear Liz and Melissa shouting for me as I went to the finish. I got so excited that I got goose bumps (no Mel, I wasn't dehydrated completely ~ just excited to hear friendly voices).

I finished 4th, not sure my time, not sure how far off the lead ladies. I didn't really go into this one with any expectations, just wanted to see where I'm at physically and figure out what I need to work on. I haven't been riding alone enough and I haven't been red lining enough in my training. More intervals to come, more lonely but focused rides and more prep for Mitchell. At this point I don't even know if a time goal is worth setting for the Assault, I think I'm going to listen to Susan and just focus on finishing the ride. I'm going to be pushing my body really hard and if I try to set a time savy pace I'll just blow myself up.

3:43:34 - DeFeet of the 4 Hr goal to Marion

3hrs 43 min 34 sec from Sparkle City to Marion.

Tiff and I struggled yesterday morning. I took a few brief moments to hit a port-o-pottie and butter my chamoi and then we got a place in the feild and waited for the start. A guy behind me was counting down but I was oblivious, I thought perhaps he was counting the seconds down on his watch. It wasn't until we started pulling off that I saw the huge sign in front of us that was counting down the time and then "GO" appeared.

The sound of so many cyclists clicking in and the hum of our bikes was amazing. The feild started to stretch early. We hit a hill leaving downtown and I turned, I'd lost Tiff and considering the amount of riders I just kept going. She was coming off an international distance tri and all she wanted was a number for Mitchell next year. But I had a time in mind to finish and I had to try for it.

I jumped in with guys who were absolutely smokin, 24-29mph depending on who was up front. Trying to make up time and catch up to the lead group I suppose. Even though I I didn't have to save anything for Mitchell I was still worried about keeping this pace for 74 miles since I hadn't trained for this distance at all. My longest group rides have been 32-35 miles and my longest solo has been about 60. I kept hearing Caroline in the back of my mind telling me "get on a good wheel & stay small, just stay small." The first 40 miles or so were pretty much nice and flat which is my preference. I was amazed at how fast time and miles were flying by. Before I knew it we were 45 miles in.

I passed Rae at some point after some dude had run her off the road. She said she might as well be mtn biking... at least she kept a sense of humor. So much of the ride was like some fuzzy dream. My concentration was on keeping a wheel in front of me, or keeping up a 25+ mph pace for miles - but the best part of it all was that I, this chick all donned in pink and blue, was hanging on this ride with a bunch of dudes that prolly wouldn't have given her a second though any other day. I was proving so much to myself. I've worked so hard these last few months to achieve the fitness that I have and it felt so freak'n awesome.

The hills really didn't bother me that much except the one after Bill's - it was a grinder and I struggled to keep my pace steady and my HR under control. Though I was pleasantly surprised to see the men slowing down as much and I was on all the hills, I even passed several of them. Each time I let out a girlish giggle on the inside. I half wanted to stick out my toungue at them as I passed and half wanted to give them a pat on the back and tell them to keep going - but I figured either would come as a very large insult from a girl wearing pink in the peloton.

At the next feed zone after Bill's Hill, I guess about 45+ miles into the ride, my West End domestique ~ Arthur ~ met me to make sure I continued to work my butt off the rest of the way so that I made my goal of under 4hrs. I think he might have over estimated my capabilities with 50 miles on my legs and I had to let him pull away a few times. He'd turn and see I was about 8 riders back and slow the pace a bit, continuosly checking on me wtih a quick glance over his shoulder. We motored for while & my legs started feeling like they wanted to cramp. Drink, drink, drink & eat. Then it happened, I was #2 in line behind Arthur and we hit the last hill into Marion. I was overcome with TIRED, I wanted to stop working, just roll the rest of the way. I told Arthur that I was popped and falling off. I think I only had about 10 miles left to go and he told me I couldn't quit, that I was to close - basically willing me back onto his wheel. The coolest thing was the fact that the guy behind me heard what I said and was encouraging me too. He said "you've pulled all of us this far, keep going."

Somehow I found just enough in my legs to crank like hell into Marion. I got into the grass & dropped my bike. My legs were weak and didn't know what to do now that I was asking them to walk and carry weight instead of pedal. I surveyed the scene... there's pink. Dawn was at the feed table so I went over and breifly talked to her while she crammed a sandwhich down her throat and tried to stay in the zone. I yelled at her as she hopped back on her bike, headed to GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS along with Giselle and Rae!! I hobbled back over to my bike - my left sit bone was in an LARGE amount of pain and made it hard to walk. I struggled to get my cell phone out so that I could call my mom and Cathy... I was so proud of myself.

I hobbled yet again over to the finishers table to collect my Marion patch and had a wonderful massage (though a bird in the rafters tried to poop on me) while waiting for Tiff to finish. As I came out of the bathroom there she was. She got changed too and we celebrated our DeFeet of Mt Marion and celebrated our excitement about Mitchell next year with some pink beer. My account isn't quite as detailed as others but to be honest I was zoned out most of the time with one end result in mind or focused completely on the wheel in front of me.

I finished 3:43:34, 16 min better than my goal with an average of 19.6. A big thanks to everyone on the team for support, to all the men who pulled me to Marion though they'll never see this blog and to my West End domestique!! I'm chomping to do Mitchell next year.

I'm Late

"I'm late, I'm late for a very important date.
No time to say hello, goodbye.
I'm late, I'm late, I'm LATE!!!"

That (the song from Alice in Wonderland as performed by the white rabbit) was all that churned through my mind this morning as I rode into the shop. The alarm went off at 5:30 and I just laid there... "Do I get up, do I stay in bed? I bet it is cold out like it was last night. I could so easily roll back over and go to sleep." I finally get up, drawing a mental map of where everything I need is located in my apt and checking off the mental checklist of cycling goodies as I grab them. Leg warmer - check, shoe covers - check, towel - check, name tag - check, and so on.

6:46am and I'm finally rolling out the door. I texted Arther to see if anyone was riding but I got no reply. I prayed that they would linger a while at the shop or at least ride through the park, passing me if they left before I got there. My bag kept shifting, I struggled to get my gloves on while in motion, wanted to stop for a coffee and continued to pray I wouldn't miss the ride. As it happens the commuter goddesses were smiling on me today and Arther and Joe passed me as I was climbing the first hill out of Cleveland Park. YES, I get a good ride in!!! They circled back and met me, I dropped my stuff at the shop and we were off. I hopped on Arther's wheel as is my usual as of late.

We cruised through the park and then into downtown, passing all the riders from the Miracle Hill Ride, there didn't appear to be a lot of them. A few stragglers thought they were supposed to follow us but we informed them otherwise. We went out to Furman & TR, hitting the usual back roads. While in TR a few things hit me on a straight, flat portion where a quickish pace is typically set. My legs felt good and bad all at the same time Arther can set a brutal pace in his little ring. But it hits me... I'm in my little ring too, keeping up and staying where I should :)

We get out to some hills and I take it easy. My legs started burning towards the end of the ride. Not really the I can't go on burn, just the it hurts like hell, I'm working pretty hard burn. We pass the front side of Paris Mtn and head back down towards the shop. This is my favorite part of the ride. Flat, slightly downhill at the end at the turn. Of course my computer still isn't working so I have no idea how fast I was going but I was going pretty freak'n fast for my ability. I got kinda perturbed at the turn b/c I had to slow down b/c there was a Mercedes SUV in front of me taken their sweet time. But an amazing ting happened. I was able to catch there draft and stay on for a short while. I couldn't believe I was actually staying with them... I had a huge grin from ear to ear so I probably looked like a dweeb and I think I might have even freaked the guy driving out though he didn't speed off like a prick or anything. I just blew up and had to fall off so he stayed the same speed and I slowed down. But I worked like hell to get to the end of the road alone, though Arther finally caught me. Joking when he caught up that I was being motor paced.

We came back to the shop, showered, ate some breakfast and started the day. The day of course being wide open as we have been extremely busy and we had a rep in today teaching us how to body scan to fit people to their bike. I'm on my second vault of the day, I just ate lunch at 4:20pm and I am ready to go home and crash. I wanted to do a moderate ride tomorrow but my knees were hurting today and I'm not sure if I should just take tomorrow off completely or what. My total this week is around 181 miles and it feels pretty good but my body is in this weird limbo between getting stronger on the bike and being exhausted all the time. I need more time on my mtb, I haven't ridden it since Stump Jump. I'm half jonesn, half scared I'm gonna be face planting from poor handling skills next time I do ride. Oh well, at least there is beer... RIGHT??

Until next time, pedal like a GIRL!!
